A History of Environmental Justice Writing in Toyon
Toyon was not always a journal based in environmental justice; however, it has always published content related to the subject despite it not being a requirement. Since its start in 1954, Toyon has had a long history in representing its surrounding environment, as well as the people who have been able to submit to the journal. This did not stop at the words put to paper. Peppered throughout the years has been many issues that featured photos of people, places, and nature adding to the overall feel of being truly down-to-earth and connected. In 2016, it was made official that Toyon was a literary journal not only focused on the voices of its creative artists that have submitted, but also a journal focused on the environment itself. In 2017, the first environmental justice award was given to Luke T. McCarthy for the poem The Watchers of the Water. There have been other art and pieces about justice not only for nature but for people as well, especially in the issues published in the 70s and 80s and continuing on in later publications.
Reflecting the social drive of the student body at Humboldt State University, Toyon has sought and continues to seek, justice with an environmental focus. From issue to issue, this is expressed--especially with the newest addition of migration as a special theme in issue 65. Equally as important is the recognition that Toyon has shifted with the times—not only featuring material arts, the journal has recently requested that there be an inclusion of spoken word to the mix. Spoken word is used as an outlet for people to voice their opinions on matters that really resonate or affect the person themselves or the world we all live in. It is worthy to make note that there has been a privileged narrative in Toyon’s history, but through the shift and affirmation in recent years, the multicultural journal has aimed rectify this. -Destiny Wright, 2018-19 Toyon Treasurer and Outreach Team Lead |
