Mi casa es...

A Special Music and Poetry Competition

Calling all Latino/a/x poets of Cal Poly Humboldt! In collaboration with the Cal Poly Humboldt Music Department and special guest composer Carlos Cordero of The Happy Choir, Toyon is proud to announce “Mi casa es…”: A Special Poetry and Music Competition. A play on the popular expression mi casa es tu casa, we’re looking to learn what tu casa means to you.

It is no secret that housing is a pressing issue in our community. Now, more than ever, it is time to make your voice heard. Whether you’ve struggled to secure housing, you’ve been displaced or trapped, or you’ve been fortunate enough to make your house your home, “Mi casa es…” aims to amplify Latino/a/x student voices and uncover the complexities of our relationships to home.

“Mi casa es…” is open to all current Latino/a/x students at Cal Poly Humboldt. One poem will be chosen to be set to music by special guest composer Carlos Cordero and performed by Cal Poly Humboldt’s University Singers, and additional selected poems will be set by student and faculty composers in Cal Poly Humboldt’s music department. Compositions will be performed at a public concert at the university in Spring 2024. Poems will also be considered for publication in Toyon Multilingual Literary Magazine Volume 70.

The deadline to submit is September 30th, 2023.
