Special Feature Section
for Volume 67

De Dos Lados

"two-sided"

In recognition and celebration of Latin American artists and their contributions to US culture and literature, Toyon presents:

De Dos Lados

Volume 67 - Special Theme
Mainstream media depictions of Latin America and Latinx people are often charged with xenophobia and reductive tropes. De Dos Lados translates to “two-sided” or “from two sides”. As people, we are always complex or “multi-sided” in literal and abstract ways. We occupy several (sometimes conflicting) roles, identities, and experiences simultaneously. Toyon looks forward to seeing which sides you share with us and we encourage multilingual submissions! While volume 67 is open to submissions related to any topic, the editorial staff will give special consideration to works within this theme.

The following list is meant to provide inspiration in relation to our theme.

  • Duality, contrast, paradox
  • Counternarrative, alternate/multiple point of view(s)
  • Relationships, arguments, dialogue
  • Code switching and code meshing
  • Cognitive dissonance, double consciousness
  • Transitional phases, limbo, general in between-ness
  • Overcoming boundaries, borders, or obstacles
  • Multiple ways of being, intersectionality

Here are some prompt questions for inspiration too.

  • Do you know of any songs, shows, movies, etc that relate to our theme?(Lit Crit)
  • What happens or would happen if worlds merged or intertwined?
  • Where does a “side” go when it is no longer front facing?
  • Why do people compartmentalize?

Submit Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, Spoken Word/Multimedia, Art and Visual Texts, Critical Analysis Essays—at www.toyonliterarymagazine.org. $100 awards in each genre.
