Special Theme Announcement
Toyon Multilingual Journal of Literature and Art
Volume 70 - Coming April 2024

Liberation Now!
Volume 70 - Special Theme

Powerful institutions have kept people, notably indigenous people and people of color, in a perpetual state of marginalization and subjugation. These institutions affect every dimension of modern life: expression of sexual identity, socioeconomic positionality, professional and social opportunity, and mortality. They have lasted for hundreds of years and are reiterated with each new generation. What is necessary for liberation? Where in society does resistance manifest? What are the support structures which enable effective resistance? Compared to the past, what are new methods of resistance that we see from the new generation?

How do we achieve liberation now?

Volume 70 is a venue to share and showcase your experience with and also expression of resistance, community building, and liberatory practice.

Here are some topics inside the theme to offer some inspiration:
  • Decolonization/Landback
  • Systemic racism
  • Abolition
  • Intersectionality and solidarity
  • Equity in race, gender, and class
  • Sexual liberation
  • Positionality
  • Grassroots movements
  • Resistance in the digital age
  • Disruption of the status quo

Here are some prompts related to the theme for more inspiration:
  • How do you build solidarity with different groups?
  • What constitutes liberation/liberatory practice?
  • How does a movement start? What sustains it?
  • What is the end goal of liberation?
  • What groups and places limit you?
  • What oppressive groups/institutions do we want to take down?
  • How can/do you liberate your body?
  • Is liberation accessible?

Submit Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, Spoken Word/Multimedia, Art and Visual Texts, Critical Analysis Essays—at www.toyonliterarymagazine.org. $100 awards in each genre.
