Barbara Curiel Multilingual Award
in Translation, Multilingual, or Spanish-Language Writing
The Multilingual Award was established in 2015 with the 62nd edition of Toyon, to recognize exceptional achievement in translation, multilingual, or Spanish-language writing. The award is funded by an anonymous donor and is named after the poet Barbara Curiel, a beloved teacher at then-Humboldt State University. Submit to this award.

It was only in 2016 that Toyon explicitly branded itself as a “Multicultural Journal of Literature and Art.” This is, however, not to say that Toyon was previously a solely English-language publication. The seeds of Toyon’s current commitment to a diverse and wide range of languages have been present since the very beginning. Did you know that the very first piece published in Toyon is titled in and contains Italian--entitled “Via Reggio”? In the first year of its existence, 1954, Toyon’s two published issues contained English, Spanish, French and Italian. Throughout its storied history, Toyon has been a celebration of polyglossia.
