Barbara Curiel Multilingual Award

The Multilingual Award was established in 2015 with the 62nd edition of Toyon, to recognize exceptional achievement in translation, multilingual, or Spanish-language writing. The award is funded by an anonymous donor and is named after the poet Barbara Curiel, a beloved teacher at Humboldt State University. Submit to this award.

The very first piece published in Toyon, in the issue released in 1954.
It was only in 2016 that Toyon explicitly branded itself as a “Multicultural Journal of Literature and Art.” This is, however, not to say that Toyon was previously a solely English-language publication. The seeds of Toyon’s current commitment to a diverse and wide range of languages have been present since the very beginning. Did you know that the very first piece published in Toyon is titled in and contains Italian--entitled “Via Reggio”? In the first year of its existence, 1954, Toyon’s two published issues contained English, Spanish, French and Italian. Throughout its storied history, Toyon has been a celebration of polyglossia.
