I Worked in a Building that Wasn't Accessible, and That’s Too Bad
Aaron Donaldson Winner of the Humor and Satire Award
I worked in a building that isn’t accessible, and that’s too bad.
In 2015 I asked for a ramp, they said it was too steep, and that
that’s too bad.
In 2020 I asked for a ramp, they said it was too expensive, and that
that’s too bad.
In 2023 I asked for a ramp. This time it might get built, leaving
“only the upstairs bathroom” inaccessible, and that’s not too bad!
I hear students talking about the stairs to this building, comparing
them to stairs elsewhere on campus. Most people campuswide
don’t even know about the situation here, because, considering
all the other problems on campus with accessibility, it’s really not
too bad.
I was born with a disease affecting my joints. Walking can be chal-
lenging, stairs are scary, and it is only getting worse even though
I’m often doing ok.
Some days I want to stand in front of the building I worked at
with a pin. Fourteen pokes if you want to go up. Fourteen pokes
if you want to come down. Sometimes I’m really gonna jab it in
there. Maybe your hip, maybe your ankle, maybe your knee. May-
be I’ll trip you! It’s always fun to see.
Tonight I came here to read this out loud. And when I came up
the stairs to get in I only got ------ pokes. Not too bad!

¡No estuvo mal!
