Toyon is the Humboldt State University English department’s annual literary magazine. Run entirely by students since its first issue in 1954, Toyon showcases the work of established and emerging writers and artists from Humboldt County and all over the world.
Each year, several hundred submissions of literature, criticism, and visual artwork are reviewed by students enrolled in the course associated with the journal's publication. All submissions are considered for the awards associated with Toyon. Recipients of these awards are given cash prizes to support their literary and artistic efforts, along with the prestige of publication in the journal.
Supported by Humboldt State University Instructionally-Related Activities funds, the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, the English department, the Environmental Studies department, as well as the generosity of community members, Toyon is distributed throughout Humboldt County each spring. Pick up your free copy in the English department office on the HSU campus.
